Every instrument has its' challenges! Any stringed instrument can be a little rocky getting started, but Uke has the advantage of being gentler on the hands and small enough to be easily accessible. It won't take long for it to start putting a smile on your face!
While we can certainly include elements of song-writing in your Ukulele lessons, it's much better to add on a songwriting lesson here and there to focus on it in addition to your Uke. Once you get to a certain level of skill, however, freedom in the lesson grows and songwriting can become a more common feature.
I'm going to give you a different answer than you've probably heard before, because while we do hold degrees in music I've seen too many amazing musicians with amazing accolades who were just not great at teaching. It takes a whole separate set of skills to be an effective teacher. In fact, my first job as a music teacher was just after junior college and I remember being amazed at how little the head instructor/owner of the school knew about music! However, I can't say that I was the best teacher, despite my knowledge. Years of experience have made me the teacher I am today. So while music education is very important to us, the quality of instruction is paramount.
